Patapa – Terms of Use

These terms apply when you use Patapa, a Japanese reading app made by Digital Lighthouse Oy, a company registered in Finland. By using the app you agree to them.

The app

Patapa is free to use. Every day there is a new story on your level, with its questions, word meanings and read-aloud. You do not need an account.

Patapa Plus

Patapa Plus is an optional paid tier. It adds the full story archive, kanji drawing and review, and the rest of the verb forms, and it includes new levels and features as they are added. It is offered as a monthly or a yearly subscription, or as a single lifetime purchase.

Payment and renewal

Purchases are made through the App Store or Google Play and charged to the account you use there. We never see or store your payment details.

A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the period ends. You can manage or cancel it in your App Store or Google Play account settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Plus stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Prices are shown in the app before you buy, in your local currency, and include any taxes the store collects.

Lifetime purchase

A lifetime purchase gives you Patapa Plus for as long as we offer Patapa, including levels and features added later, with no further payment.

Restoring purchases

Because there is no account, Plus belongs to your App Store or Google Play account rather than to us. On a new device, use Restore purchases in the app.

Refunds

Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies; we cannot issue them directly. This does not affect your rights as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.

Using the content

The stories, questions and other content in Patapa are for your own personal, non-commercial use. Please do not copy, republish or sell them. Stroke-order data comes from the KanjiVG project and is used under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 licence.

Accuracy

We take care over readings, meanings and translations, but Patapa is a learning aid and some errors are inevitable. If you find one, we would be glad to hear about it.

Changes to the app

We may update Patapa and change its features. If a change would significantly reduce what Patapa Plus includes, we will say so in the app before it takes effect.

Liability

Patapa is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect losses arising from its use. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be limited by law, or your statutory rights as a consumer.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of Finland. If you are a consumer living elsewhere in the European Union, you keep the protection of the mandatory rules of your country of residence.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, the new version will be posted here with a new date. A change that affects an active subscription takes effect from its next renewal.
